Unfortunately, roofs don’t last forever but many people tend to forget this. You may be asking yourself, “How do I know when my roof needs to be replaced?” If you have owned your home for more than ten years, it’s a good time to start questioning if you need roof replacement.
Check the Exterior
Visually inspect your roof for shingles that are cracked, bald or torn. Also keep a lookout for missing shingles.Don’t stop at just the shingles. Inspect the areas around the chimney, pipes, and vents for any wear or loose materials.
Next, check your gutters for shingle granules as this could be a sign of advanced wear. While you’re at it, make sure the gutters and downspouts are securely attached.Lastly, make sure all the vents for you bath, kitchen, and dryer are entirely outside of your home, not just into the attic space.
Check the Interior
Don’t forget to inspect the interior as well. Check for the following:
- Signs of water damage
- Outside light showing through the roof
- Dark spots
- Places where the roof deck is sagging
