No part of your home protects you more from the harsh elements than your roof. Even though we should probably leave all of the complicated stuff up to the professionals, it doesn’t hurt to learn a few of the basics. In that spirit, we’ve put together a quick overview of 3 different basic roof components:
Rafters: These slanted wood beams (pictured left) carry the brunt of the force of gravity. Also, they keep water running off the side of your house rather than pooling up on the roof.
Ridge Board: This sturdy wood board (pictured left) connects the rafters together. It basically establishes the roof’s tallest point (apex).
Ceiling Joists: Without the ceiling joists (pictured left), the weight of the rafters would push the walls of your house apart. It keeps the rafters in place so they can’t do this.
Hopefully this helps you understand the way your roof works a little bit better. Should you need residential roofing services in Glastonbury, CT, Alliance Roofing has you covered. If you’d like more information, please give us a call at (860) 633-7243.
